How to Mount an ISO via IPMI

WARNING
The operation requires the entire physical host to be rebooted.

PREREQUISITES
IPMI: ensure you have access to the IPMI interface for remote management.
ISO: download the correct ISO file based on the software you want to start or install
Java: verify that Java is correctly installed on your system, to support necessary tools.
DHCP: ensure at least two IP addresses are available via DHCP, for network configuration.
VPN (avoid): if possible, avoid working through a VPN connection, for optimal performance.
Downtime: schedule appropriate downtime, as it will be required to complete this process.

 

Step 1. Power-off all VMs and VMware ESXi system

Step 2. Login to IPMI GUI

 

Via GUI (firmware 01.01.24)

Access the Remote Control panel, select Java plug-in, then click on Launch Console


Via GUI (firmware 03.17.02)

Access Remote Control panel

Click on Launch Console button under “Current interface: JAVA plug-in”

 

Step 3. From IPMI console, lick on Virtual Media > Virtual Storage


Step 4. Click on CDROM&ISO


Step 5. Select ISO file, click on Open Image, select the ISO file and click on Plug in


Step 6. Check the outout and click on OK


Step 7. Go back to IPMI console (Step 3)

Step 8. Click on Power Control, then click on Set PowerOn


Step 9. During reboot, immediately press F11 key to load the Boot Menu

Step 10. Select ISO from boot device
