PREREQUISITES
If the import is performed to convert the VM and migrate both its storage and compute resources to Syneto Hyperion, it is mandatory to ensure that the VM has been properly shutdown before starting the import procedure.

Step 1. Login to SynetoOS GUI

https://<your_ip_address_or_hostname>

Step 2. From Virtualization menu, click on Hypervisors

Step 3. Click on Add hypervisor button

Step 4. Fill in the required fields to add an external VMware ESXi and click the Add button

Step 5. From Virtualization menu, click on Virtual machines

Step 6. Select the VM you want to import

Step 7. In the top right corner, click on the three dots and then on Import

Step 8. Click on Next button

IMPORTANT
During the import, it is required to choose whether to register the VM. This choice determines the intended use of the VM.

  • Scenario 1: VM Registered The VM is registered on an ESXi host (the compute host). Its files reside on the Hyperion appliance storage, shared to the ESXi host via an NFS datastore (storage local, compute remote). The VM can run immediately on ESXi. Conversion to Hyperion (KVM) is still possible at a later stage.
  • Scenario 2:  VM Not Registered (recommended when the goal is to migrate to Hyperion) The VM is imported without being registered on any ESXi host and therefore cannot run on ESXi. This is the correct path when the intent is to fully migrate from ESXi to Hyperion

Step 9. Click on Next button

Step 10. Check the entire configuration and click on Import

Step 11. Convert the VM ("How to Convert an ESXi VM into an Hyperion VM")
