This article describes how to migrate a Syneto Infrastructure from ESXi to Hyperion using an example infrastructure of 2 nodes.

PREREQUISITES

• Both appliances are running SynetoOS 6.
• Confirm both servers support SynetoOS 6 with Hyperion.
• Confirm you have enough free storage space for the conversion. Converting all virtual machines from ESXi to Hyperion requires twice (2x) the storage space consumed by the virtual machines, not counting Recovery Points.
• Confirm which virtual machines can be automatically converted from ESXi to Hyperion, and prepare a manual migration plan for any that cannot.
• Confirm both servers are configured as replication targets for each other.
• Download the SynetoOS with Hyperion CD image, then burn it to a USB stick, or stream it as a virtual CD-ROM via IPMI/iLO/iDRAC.
• Confirm DHCP is available on the network.

Install SynetoOS with Hyperion on the First Server

Step 1. Choose which server to migrate first, based on business needs

Step 2. Shut down all virtual machines on the server

IMPORTANT
The shutdown must be clean — no pending OS updates or application upgrades.

Step 3. Perform a final replica of all shut-down virtual machines to the replication target ("How to Configure a SLA policy to Replicate on a Secondary System in SynetoOS 6")

Step 4. Modify the existing SLA policies to add a minutely protection rule ("How to Manage SLA Policies in SynetoOS 6")

Every 5 minutes, 1 hour retention.

Step 5. Unregister all virtual machines on the appliance

Step 6. Export the storage pool ("How to Export an Existing Pool in SynetoOS 6")

Step 7. Shut down the SynetoOS virtual machine

Step 8. Power off the physical server

NOTE
It is recommended to unplug all storage pool data disks from the server before proceeding, so the installer cannot touch them.

Step 9. Power on the physical server

Step 10. Remove ESXi from the boot environment drives

Step 11. Install Hyperion on the server ("SynetoOS 6 with Hyperion Installation Guide")

NOTE
When the installer shuts the server down, plug the storage pool data disks back in.

Step 12. Power on the server

Step 13. Start SynetoOS and complete the Quick Setup ("SynetoOS 6 Quick Setup")

NOTE
If already performed during the installation (Step 11), you can skip this step.

Step 14. Import the storage pool ("How to Import an Existing Pool in SynetoOS 6")

Step 15. Login to SynetoOS GUI (replace <your_ip_address_or_hostname> with the correct ip/hostname)

Step 16. From the Virtualization menu, click on Virtual machines

Step 17. Enable the Type and Host columns from the Columns icon

Step 18. From the Hypervisors menu, connect SynetoOS to the remaining ESXi hypervisor on the other server

Convert Local Virtual Machines

Step 1. From the Virtual machines page, select the unregistered virtual machine(s) to convert

Step 2. Open the action menu and select Register ("How to Register a VM in SynetoOS 6")

• Register the virtual machine(s) on the existing ESXi
• Leave Power on after registering unchecked
• Check Connect networks
• Check Keep the original MAC address

Step 3. Open the action menu again and select Convert to Hyperion ("How to Convert an ESXi VM into an Hyperion VM") or ("How to Manually Convert an ESXi Legacy VM into an Hyperion VM")

• Register the virtual machine(s) on your new Hyperion Host
• Check Power on after registering
• Check Connect networks
• Check Keep the original MAC address

NOTE
Conversion requires a complete copy of the selected virtual machine on the same storage pool the VM is registered and powered on.

IMPORTANT
If the guest OS is Windows, the VM starts and shuts down 3 times to convert the virtual hardware and install drivers (~15 minutes)

Step 4. Repeat until all local virtual machines are converted to Hyperion

Convert Replica Virtual Machines

Step 1. From the Replicas page, select the replicated virtual machine(s) to convert

IMPORTANT
Confirm you have replicated Recovery Points with the virtual machine shut down.

Step 2. Clone and register the latest Recovery Point on the existing ESXi ("How to Register a VM in SynetoOS 6")

• Leave Power on after registering unchecked
• Check Connect networks
• Check Keep the original MAC address

Step 3. Open the action menu again and select Convert to Hyperion ("How to Convert an ESXi VM into an Hyperion VM") or ("How to Manually Convert an ESXi Legacy VM into an Hyperion VM")

• Register the virtual machine(s) on your new Hyperion Host
• Check Power on after registering
• Check Connect networks
• Check Keep the original MAC address

NOTE
Conversion requires a complete copy of the selected virtual machine on the same storage pool the VM is registered and powered on.

Step 4. Power off the physical server

It is recommended to unplug all storage pool data disks from the server before proceeding, so the installer cannot touch them.

Step 5. Power on the physical server

Step 6. Remove ESXi from the boot environment drives

Step 7. Install Hyperion on the server ("SynetoOS 6 with Hyperion Installation Guide")

Step 8. Power on the server

Cleanup

Step 1. Delete ESXi virtual machine replicas ("How to Manage Replicas in SynetoOS 6")

Step 2. Delete cloned virtual machines before decommissioning the ESXi hypervisor
