Special roles can be assigned to specific drives during pool configuration to optimize performance and resilience:
- Metadata: Speeds up file indexing, directory browsing, and backup deduplication by storing the file on high-speed drives.
- Write Acceleration: Acts as a fast "waiting room" that lowers latency for synchronous data writes, common in databases and VMs.
- Read Acceleration: Extends the system cache to store frequently accessed data on fast drives, significantly boosting read performance.
- Spares: Provides standby drives that automatically replace a failed disk to begin an immediate repair of the storage pool.
