Introduction

SynetoOS 6.0.3 is an important platform update packed with new backup and storage capabilities, smarter data protection, and important stability improvements.

System Stability Fix

We identified a kernel stability issue that can cause the SynetoOS 6.0.x operating system to become unresponsive, affecting primarily G4, G4+ and G5 appliances. 6.0.3 includes an updated kernel that resolves it — once you upgrade, your appliance is protected.

New Features

Storage

Starting from SynetoOS 6.0.3, the full data management feature set applicable to local drives has been extended to support NAS or SAN appliances via the iSCSI protocol. This gives users a new way to leverage existing investments in storage hardware. The full feature set — including resilient data storage, the built-in HCI stack with VM, storage and networking virtualisation, data protection with SLA policies, and replication and recovery at VM and file level — now works seamlessly when connecting with external appliances, with no extra tooling needed. In practice, this means:

• Forever incremental recovery points, with low RPO, can now be stored on NAS, helping achieve 3-2-1 data protection
• Automated checks guarantee the integrity of the data
• Instant zero-copy cloning helps validate the internal consistency of VM data for backup recovery rehearsal scenarios
• Files can be recovered in seconds from backup targets
• Capacity for running VMs can be instantly extended by connecting to external appliances

Capabilities include:

• A full UI workflow to add targets, browse LUNs, and create storage pools on iSCSI-backed storage from the same interface already in use
• External backup support: an SLA policy can replicate to the iSCSI pool using the native block-level SyFS file system, supporting the same low RTO and high-frequency RPO already available on physical drives
• Multipath support: the system tracks path health, flags degraded connections in real time, and automatically recovers pools when connectivity is restored
• Alerting for path loss, I/O errors, and session issues, so administrators are notified before their VMs are affected
• Export of pools not in use by VMs

Data Protection

Two additions give administrators more control over when and where data is protected:

• Replication time windows: replication jobs can be excluded from running during specific time intervals, so backup traffic never competes with production during business hours
• Local pool-to-pool SLA replication: data can be protected by replicating between two pools on the same appliance — particularly useful when both a flash pool and a hybrid pool are available, keeping short retention on the fast flash pool and replicating to the hybrid pool for longer retention, improving storage efficiency without needing a second device

Security

A new CLI tool, syneto-support-connect, has been introduced to manage support tunnels.
