How to configure NTP in VMware ESXi

Verify NTP

Step 1. Login to VMware ESXi GUI

Step 2. Access Time & date (Manage menu, System tab)

 

Step 3. Confirm NTP service is running

If the NTP service is running, your NTP settings are correctly configured.

 

Configure NTP

Step 1. Login to VMware ESXi GUI

Step 2. Access Services (Manage menu, Services tab)

  • Start the ntpd service and verify Running Status

 

If you receive the following error while attempting to restart the service, then proceed with the next steps to verify your DNS configuration.

Failed - Cannot change the host configuration.

 

Step 3 (optional). Verify your DNS configuration

 

Step 4 (optional). Connect to VMware ESXi CLI (via SSH)

Step 5 (optional). Run the following commands

/etc/init.d/ntpd status
/etc/init.d/ntpd start

 

Step 6 (optional). Add NTP server

  • Access Time & date (Manage menu, System tab)
  • Click on Edit NTP Settings
  • Configure your NTP (Network Time Protocol) server
